学校教务处、教师教学发展中心与外国语学院一起聘请校内外、国内外外语教育研究专家作为外语教师专业发展指导教师,以工作坊、专题研讨、研究团队等形式带领学院教师展开教学学术研究。2017年11月23-24日,教务处、教师教学发展中心将邀请香港教育大学语言教育系袁睿助理教授到我校开展教学学术研究专题工作坊。具体安排如下:

Conceptualizing and conducting qualitative research on and as teachers
The past decades have experienced a paradigm shift in teacher education, moving from the traditional mode of knowledge transmission to a socio-cultural view of teacher learning. Such a shift gives rise to a growing volume of research on how teachers think, believe, feel, practice and develop in their embedded institutional and socio-cultural contexts. In this seminar, informed by existing literature and drawing on my previous research, I will share and discuss how educational researchers can conduct research on and as teachers through qualitative research methods in their work settings. Key conceptual constructs in teacher education, such as teacher identities, teacher cognitions and teacher emotions, will be presented with specific cases provided to show how they can be qualitatively examined to inform teaching and teacher education. The audience will also be invited to share and explore possible directions for future research.

University-school collaborative action research: What do language teachers and teacher educators say?
In second teacher education, university–school collaborative action research (CAR) has been proposed as an effective approach to help language teachers develop their research competence and improve their teaching effectiveness. However, there is little information the specific needs and challenges of language teachers and teacher educators in CAR and how they navigate the challenges to promote mutual learning in their co-constructed communities. In this seminar, drawing on my previous research (Yuan & Lee, 2015; Yuan & Mak, 2016), I will present a group of language teachers’ and teacher educators’ CAR experiences in the Chinese context. While I will demonstrate the personal and contextual obstacles the two parties encountered as well as their coping strategies, I will also show how they tried to overcome communication barriers and power differentials and seek meaningful, in-depth collaboration. The presentation will conclude with practical recommendations on how to maximize the potential of CAR in enhancing language teaching and teacher development.

The “myth” of academic publishing: Strategies and reflections
In current higher education settings influenced by strong trends of internationalization and performativity, there is an increasing demand on academics to publish their research works in international journals. In this workshop, I will give a general introduction about the process of manuscript submission, revision and publishing in international journals in the educational field. Specific examples derived from my own publishing experiences will be used to illustrate useful strategies on how to address editors’ and reviewers’ comments and enhance the acceptance rate. The workshop will also give audience some practical experience of critiquing a research paper and discussing how to make improvements as reviewers.
Personal Biography 袁瑞个人简介
Rui Yuan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language Education at The Education University of Hong Kong. His research interests include teacher development and teacher educators in higher education. He has published over 20 papers in SSCI Journals, including Teaching and Teacher Education, Teachers and Teaching: Theory and Practice, Teaching in Higher Education and TESOL Quarterly.
